(More customer reviews)Being smokers, my wife and I had a couple of Sharper Image Ionic air cleaners hoping they'd remove particles from the air.They worked somewhat, but we found an unintended by-product, ozone, actually had the most positive effect.The ozone was neutralizing smoke odor.We'd always be pleasantly surprised when visitors had no idea they were in a smoker's home.But the ionic air cleaners were delicate, hard to clean, expensive and broke down after a few years.
Later we noticed some hotels had small hidden ozone-generators and they kept the rooms smelling fresh.We bought a few of these small units, they could run all the time without the ozone smell bothering anyone, but were also hard to clean and eventually gunked up since being run all the time.We got a more powerful unit that was meant to 'shock' a room and it worked well for a few years, was a bit easier to clean, but all of these units eventually died due to crud accumulation across their small ozone-generating surface.. a spark element.
A few years ago we decided to stop smoking in the house and now do it in our sunroom only.That room eventually started to stink especially after humid days helping 'bind' the smoke to any surface.My wife decided it was time for another generator and found this model (the Sylvan OG-3500).Our research found many units that put out a measly few tenths/grams of ozone/hr but they were many hundreds of dollars.. this plain-box item claimed to be 3.5 grams (3500mg) which I doubted.. but it was the least expensive.
Onto the OG-3500 itself; it utterly blows away anything we've had before.. so much that it can only be used for 'shock' treatments.Run for an hour in the sunroom (14'x14') it totally eliminates odors and it stays clean-smelling until we pollute the room again.When placed in our teenage son's stinky room (damp towels on the floor, stinky socks, food, and the fact he keeps the door closed) it totally eliminates his odors too.Previous machines would have had to run all night, but we just set the timer to run for up to an hour when we feel it's time for a treatment.For extreme cases (like smoke damage or killing mildew after a flood) you can switch it to run constantly.
Unlike our other units having a 'sparker', the OG-3500 has what looks like a 4"x4" mica plate with a bunch of stripes on it.. no open spark but the stripes glow a bright flourescent purple.The large area instantly produces a huge (repeat HUGE) amount of ozone.The frequency of cleaning the unit itself depends on the amount of dust and gunk that accumulate inside.This box's innards look to be much more accessible so I expect to blow it clean with compressed air once or twice a year, and hopefully don't have to open it up for a deeper cleaning for at least a few years.Since we only run it for short bursts it theoretically will last 10x longer.
We've come to think of ozone as 'bleach for the air'.Realize this unit is not an air-cleaner but a power tool and should be used properly as high concentrations will irritate your lungs.You definitely don't want to be around when it's on and may want to air-out the room afterwards to rid the ozone smell.. alternately, leave the room unused for a few hours and the remaining ozone will decay back into odorless oxygen.The room will be left completely odorless.
