When I bought a used Filter Queen online, it came with a generic cone filter and the first thing I noticed was that it was incredibly thin compared to the genuine cones. It lets dust through to the filter, which in turn damages your motor over time. I was always amazed how the genuine cones never let ANY dust or dirt through. The side of the cone facing the dust cup would be brown while the side facing the motor would remain pure white. Not so with the generic cones. The genuine cones are also much thicker. It's like comparing one ply toilet paper with three ply.

With the automatic dispenser it leaves the room with a constant fresh smell. It does leave a residue on the floor or furniture if it is placed to close to these objects. Follow the recommendation of the placement and no problems. I have four cats and never have to worry about odor, as I have one right beside their box.... LEW

(More customer reviews)I bought this machine out of desperation. It appeared to be well designed and contained a dehumidifier and humidifier and an air filter.
It was available at a nearby store and I paid more than I should have for it.

Well, I read bad reviews of this thing (about 60/40) but bought it anyway, and I have the topper for them all This piece of junk stopped working after FOUR HOURS OF OPERATION.

It did really well for the four hours. Now its little digital display won't light up, its bucket indicator is full, but there is no water in the bucket. I'm taking the trash back to the retailer today and buying a Kenmore at Sears instead.

AVOID THIS PRODUCT. DO NOT BUY IT.

(More customer reviews)I think germ guardian makes some very good products.I own a few of their plug in GG-1000 UV germ/odor killers and I like them.I got this unit because it had actual particle filtration and carbon filtration for odor removal.It looks like a great all in one package from a company that is making a decent name for themselves thus far in the all too marketing based field of air purification.

This unit is SMALL, and I mean small..8" x 6" x 3.5"It has a TINY air filter with a terribly high price tag to replace.For comparison, many other units which are large and have excellent consumer ratings cost less to replace the filter.The internal UV light is non-replaceable and the company makes no claim towards its longevity.It seems unlikely the light will last more than a few months.

The unit functioned well for a few days but after that its tiny filter became so clogged it barely output any air.The unit is not very quiet like the GG-1000 units when on high speed.Air output on low speed is negligible.In my opinion the unit would be adequate to purify the air volume of a car not a room.

I have owned the unit less than 2 weeks and I just purchased a 3M FAP02-RS to replace it.Hopefully I can take it back to big box mart with the replacement filter I already bought for it.There is no way I will change a filter out every two weeks just to keep it running correctly.Perhaps this is my fault, the size alone of this unit suggests its inability to handle a small bedroom.I had my doubts but I liked the GG-1000s.

Looking at the product description here, it says the filter is washable.Uhm..it is made out of paper and NOTHING in the documentation (or common sense) suggests washing it.This "Photo-Catalytic Oxidation" is not mentioned anywhere on the product or the parent website.A little excess marketing for the local crowd I guess.In my opinion, its a small fan, a paper filter, and a cheap unreplaceable (magic) light bulb in a unit about the same size as my external hard drive.How much affect do you really think that will have?

It's called a table top air purifier with no real mention of how much it can really handle.I think calling it a dashboard air purifier might be more appropriate.It works a little bit but it truly fell short of my expectations and I doubt I will even waste the electricity on it much longer.You can get a good purifier with a much higher capacity in this price range.

On a final note, UV-C light kills germs at a slow/moderate pace.As I understand it, the air must be in contact with the light for some period of time before it will become effective at killing the bad stuff.A air filter must move large quantities of air through a filter to be effective at physical removal of contaminants.This unit tries to do both and I feel like it is a miss at least for mechanical filtration.

LW44 GRY Airwasher Review

(More customer reviews)I was so confused by all the information you can get on humidifiers I bought four and tried them all. I also have an AprilAire Central humidifier and spoke to our HVAC company as part of this. Here's the net:

When the humidity is right (40%-60%) it eliminates dry skin and stuffy noses. My dog also quit scratching. Guitar makers recommend it.

The Venta LW 44 is my favorite unit. (Note - this review is about the LW44. The LLC 5044436 is similar but wasn't available when I bought mine. I still thought this might be useful to buyers.) It has no filter at all. It cleans the air using the water. It's easy to fill, and requires less attention in terms of filling and cleaning. Overall it's a simpler design. Visually it's the least obtrusive unit - the only one my daughter would allow in her room. It's also the quietest. It also cleans the air so it eliminates an air cleaning device. In some reviews it is criticized for not humidifying. Unlike the others it doesn't have a built-in hygrometer. The moisture it puts into the air is not as noticeable as the others. However, I got a separate hygrometer and it works as well as the others. The humidity can be the same level in a room, and it will feel more humid with one unit than another. The steam units make you feel the moisture the most. The feeling of moisture - by-the-way - is not good. The less it feels moist the better. Venta allows you to use scented oils, if you like that option. Others do not. Amazon has several hygrometers. I got the Honeywell TM005X Wireless Thermo-Hygrometer.

Central Unit - The central unit will not do the job alone. We have a two-story house and it really has no impact on the upper level, where the bedrooms are and where you most need it.

Air-O-Swiss U7142 Ultrasonic humidifier. I saw it at a Bed, Bath and Beyond while shopping and it looked so slick I got it. It's not obvious until you get it home, but the instructions require you to place it up 3 feet off the ground, even though it looks like a floor unit. This is going to be a problem in most rooms because it limits where you can put it and it becomes the visual focus of the room. It worked for one day, though it produced a lot of white powder that covered the unit itself and would have become a problem for every object in the room. It only got the room to 29% humididty. On the second day the red light was on, so I refilled it and could never get it to work again. After hours of effort and troubleshooting with the customer support line, I could never make it work. The good news is that Bed, Bath and Beyond was super easy to deal with on the return and had the Venta model I discovered when troubleshooting the Air-O-Swiss.

Honeywell QuietCare - This unit will definitely humidify a room. It has a built in hygrometer. So you can set it to get to a certain level and stop. The two big tanks make the job of filling it less frequent, and the two-tank design is a good idea since it would be hard for most people to handle a single tank with 11 gallons of water. On the downside, it's a bit loud on high and you need it on high when it's cold outside and the humidity inside is low. The tanks often don't work, as they have to be positioned just right and I've never mastered getting them on 100% right 100% of the time. It has a filter, so it's cleaning he air - but the instructions tell you to remove the (rather large) filter and re-wet it every time you fill it. That's such a pain I doubt anyone would do it. Another reviewer suggested just flipping it over each time - good idea! After a while it begins to smell a bit moldy, so you have to clean it and change the filter. I ordered this from Amazon.

Honeywell Quick Steam - This unit also definitely quickly and noticeably humidifies a room. Since it's the hot steam type you can actually see the steam and you feel it more in the air. It has a smaller tank - needs refilled more often. Also has a filter, but only for the water, so it never has a bad smell. It gurgles and my wife can't sleep in a room with it. The sound from the other units is limited to the sound of the fan, which on low is fairly quiet and on high is like white noise. I also ordered this from Amazon.

(More customer reviews)I am suprised by all the negative reviews. We bought 1 for my oldest daughter last year (end 2006) as she had croup and it worked just fine. A few months ago my youngest daughter had also a cold and cough at the same time as my oldest so we went back to buy a second one.

We don't have mold issues (even though very often if it is not in use we forget to take the water out...and to take the water out is recommended)

It makes the room humid enough (windows are wet the next morning) the best thing for cold/coughing instead of dry air.

Yes it makes quit a lot of noise when it is running but it doesn't cause a problem for my 2 girls to feel or stay in sleep.

And yes we had the first time we used also the waterproblem as we didn't put it back right. But after that never had a problem again...

They are both still working!

(More customer reviews)Being smokers, my wife and I had a couple of Sharper Image Ionic air cleaners hoping they'd remove particles from the air.They worked somewhat, but we found an unintended by-product, ozone, actually had the most positive effect.The ozone was neutralizing smoke odor.We'd always be pleasantly surprised when visitors had no idea they were in a smoker's home.But the ionic air cleaners were delicate, hard to clean, expensive and broke down after a few years.

Later we noticed some hotels had small hidden ozone-generators and they kept the rooms smelling fresh.We bought a few of these small units, they could run all the time without the ozone smell bothering anyone, but were also hard to clean and eventually gunked up since being run all the time.We got a more powerful unit that was meant to 'shock' a room and it worked well for a few years, was a bit easier to clean, but all of these units eventually died due to crud accumulation across their small ozone-generating surface.. a spark element.

A few years ago we decided to stop smoking in the house and now do it in our sunroom only.That room eventually started to stink especially after humid days helping 'bind' the smoke to any surface.My wife decided it was time for another generator and found this model (the Sylvan OG-3500).Our research found many units that put out a measly few tenths/grams of ozone/hr but they were many hundreds of dollars.. this plain-box item claimed to be 3.5 grams (3500mg) which I doubted.. but it was the least expensive.

Onto the OG-3500 itself; it utterly blows away anything we've had before.. so much that it can only be used for 'shock' treatments.Run for an hour in the sunroom (14'x14') it totally eliminates odors and it stays clean-smelling until we pollute the room again.When placed in our teenage son's stinky room (damp towels on the floor, stinky socks, food, and the fact he keeps the door closed) it totally eliminates his odors too.Previous machines would have had to run all night, but we just set the timer to run for up to an hour when we feel it's time for a treatment.For extreme cases (like smoke damage or killing mildew after a flood) you can switch it to run constantly.

Unlike our other units having a 'sparker', the OG-3500 has what looks like a 4"x4" mica plate with a bunch of stripes on it.. no open spark but the stripes glow a bright flourescent purple.The large area instantly produces a huge (repeat HUGE) amount of ozone.The frequency of cleaning the unit itself depends on the amount of dust and gunk that accumulate inside.This box's innards look to be much more accessible so I expect to blow it clean with compressed air once or twice a year, and hopefully don't have to open it up for a deeper cleaning for at least a few years.Since we only run it for short bursts it theoretically will last 10x longer.

We've come to think of ozone as 'bleach for the air'.Realize this unit is not an air-cleaner but a power tool and should be used properly as high concentrations will irritate your lungs.You definitely don't want to be around when it's on and may want to air-out the room afterwards to rid the ozone smell.. alternately, leave the room unused for a few hours and the remaining ozone will decay back into odorless oxygen.The room will be left completely odorless.

Plasma Cool PC-14E Portable Air Conditioner Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this machine from a local Oreck where I live. It was being advertised for sale long before their stock arrived in the store. I ordered it in spring of 2009 and the machine didn't arrive until nearly the end of July 2009. I used the machine for less than 2 months.At the end of the season I followed the storage instructions (drained the unit, cleaned the filter, unplugged the machine).

When I started it up in April 2010, the machine made a horrid sluggish, grinding noise, similar to that of a dishwasher that hasn't been used in awhile.Turned out that it only made that noise when the cooling function was on, not when it was just set to straight fan.They do not offer in home service and you are expected to drag the machine to their shop for service. Not easy to do if you are a girl who isn't strong, doesn't drive and doesn't have anyone to help you do that.

After 2 weeks and one night of just leaving it run loudly until it either blew up or stopped making noise, I left it running. It stopped making noise and seemingly worked well.

Two days later I come home to a flood in my living room. My entire 5 x 8 foot area rug was completely saturated with water as was my hard wood floor!

The drain plug on these machines is in a really awkward place. It's at the back about 1 inch from the floor. Since this machine is not supposed to collect water, there is no door that you can open to simply empty a bucket. And the little container that they do give you to catch the few "drops" of water that may be left in the unit after this "Nano Misty Technology" was useless because it is created to lay down on the ground.There must have been a gallon of water in the machine. I ended up having to put heavy towels under the drain and catch the water coming out that way.

I had to take 1/2 day off of work (unpaid time). They came and exchanged it with another one.The one I received was not in a box, so I don't know if it was new or a show room model, or a refurbished model that was returned. It is a bit dinged up in some spots, so I have to wonder.

The "new" machine was delivered yesterday afternoon.Today at 5pm, 24 hours after turning it on, I came home to a huge flood in my living room again!!!!And of course they aren't there on Saturday, so I have to live through a hot weekend once again without having any air conditioning because this machine can't be trusted to be used without flooding my hard wood floors and warping them!!!

My advice is to stay far and away from this piece of trash!!!

I'm going to be demanding my money back.
