A little research pays off! This was my first air purifier purchase. Originally, I was going to buy an ionic one. But, I was amazed once I started researching how little I knew!

In case you're in the same boat, Here's the criteria I ultimately set, ratings for this model on the criteria, and my experience with it:

CRITERIA #1: Must noticably reduce our allergies, clear smoke and odors:5+ Stars!
Have had it two months with a smoker, a hairy dog, and allergy season in full bloom. Reduced allergies and no breathing problems at home since we got it. Noticable quick removal of odors and smoke!

(NOTE: More power than I even intended. You may be able to get a cheaper model if you don't want all this one has:
A) Electrostatic/Ionic- attracts pollutants from a wide area, but not odors and allergens
B) Carbon - clears smoke, odors and pollutants but not germs and allergens
C) HEPA - traps even the smallest of allergens, but nothing else
D) UV - destroys bacteria and germs, but not allergens, pollution or smoke - cheaper models offer only HEPA and UV filters.)

Best Added Feature: The sensor lights that let you know the status of your air quality - and then watching them go off when it's corrected the problem.

CRITERIA #2: Low/No ozone model! 5+ stars.
I found that the old sharper image-type ionic-only models (many still on the market at reduced prices) only clean pollutants, but not odors and allergens.Worse, they generate ozone at a level that can exacberate asthma problems. The electrostatic filter combined with the ionic one in this model - eliminate that problem. Look for one that has this!

CRITERIA #3: High area coverage: 4.5 stars.
I found an obscure site that lists air purifiers and their coverage areas and particle levels. This one seems to cover about 1,200 sq. ft. - or more than double what is listed. But, even with what was listed, proved to be the best ranked in comparison with price levels.

CRITERIA #4: Low Noise: 4-stars.
We keep it in the living room mostly on auto. On low and medium, it's very quiet. On automatic mostly very quiet, unless it's under attack from something like cooking or opening the door frequently. On high, it makes a noticable "white noise". But, it's OK good for falling asleep and not so loud you can't hear the TV. Wouldn't put it on "high" regularly though.

CRITERIA #5: Price/Value including maintenance: 4.5 stars
My budget was $200.I went over that slightly. But, the filters on this one are so much cheaper than the models I compared it to that the extra $40 should more than pay out.

BOTTOM LINE: I chose this one based on research, but I highly recommend it for quality and value! If you want to cleaner, fresher air and reduced home allergies without intrusive noise - at the price, I'm not sure you can do better.

The description says HEPA filter, but the box said HEPA-type filter.I am not sure what this will mean for the life of the filter, as I have vaccumed it several times and it still looks dirty. However there seems to be less dust in the room and my son says he has less allergy issues at night, so - so far so good.

I origninally rated this 4 stars, but would downgrade to 2 stars.
I have owned this for almost a year now, the fan now makes an annoying rattling sound that lessens somewhat on the high setting. The 'clean filter' light has come on and stayed on even though I vacuum it weekly. For what I paid I am disappointed in the performance.

I love this filter! After one week I was shocked at how much dirt it cleaned up from our air. You do have to replace the filters but it is totally worth it.

If it is in the room with you and you are trying to talk or watch tv it is very NICE to be able to turn it down, to hear better without having to turn it off. Don't get me wrong, even the high setting is NOT that noisey. I highly recommend this air cleaner for the price and for the quality.

Honeywell 17000 Permanent Pure HEPA QuietCare Air Purifier Review

Honeywell 17000 Permanent Pure HEPA QuietCare Air Purifier

As someone who is highly allergic to cigarette smoke and other air pollutants and irritants, I purchased a round Honeywell HEPA air filter when it first came on the market several years ago. It still works well in the living room, but it is quite noisy even on its lowest setting.
This year I purchased another Honeywell air cleaner with a HEPA filter (Model 17400) for my bedroom because I had contacted bacterial pneumonia last year and wanted to make sure I did not get it again. Next, I purchased this Honeywell 17000 Air Cleaner (with HEPA filter) for use in a smaller bedroom which has been turned into a home office and library.
These air cleaners really work! This winter I have not had a cold or flu. Also, this Honeywell Air Cleaner with HEPA filter is whisper soft, and I have had no problems with sleeping, working, reading, watching tv, or listening to music when it is running on the low and medium settings. I leave it on all the time, and I've found that it cleans the air best when the door is closed.
It has a convenient handle on the top, so I can move it to another room quite easily. Also, it is light enough that I can take it with me in the car if I want to use it away from home.
The prefilters last about 3-6 months, (and they can be vacuumed often if you have pets who shed). I change my HEPA filter every year, but you can wait 3 years to do so. These filters are easy to change. The Model 17000 is for a smaller room, and the Model 17400 is for a larger space.
Highly recommended for anyone who has pets, who lives with or entertains people who smoke, and who is allergic to dust, molds, or pollens.

Hamilton Beach 04383 True Air Allergen-Reducing Air Cleaner Review

I received my item (though late, Thanks Amazon), and apparently all my research into an air cleaner has paid off. This little guy does exactly what it says and works like a charm.

Here's why I bought it. I wanted an air cleaner for a medium to small sized room where I keep my cat's litter box. Normally, it doesn't smell, but about the day it's time to change it, I can smell it. Now, I don't want to smell it ever, though I keep my kitty box schedule in tact. Anyway, this air cleaner is so quiet on Whisper Mode that I literally cannot hear it. I even put it in my roommate's bedroom, just to see if she realized it was in there, before moving it to its final destination. She had no clue.

The model has 3 speeds, but the Whisper Mode is fine for continuous daily use. Sure, you can turn it up, and you'll hear it's low whirrrrrr, but that's to be expected.

Another reason I bought it is that it IS a HEPA quality cleaner. But I don't have to buy replacement filters--ever. This one has a "permanent" filter, which I didn't even know existed. To clean it, it says about once every 6 months to just use your hose and brush attachment of your vacuum cleaner and suck it out. Really? That's awesome! Why don't ALL HEPA filters do this. That feels like such a waste. I'm not allergic to anything, but my purpose for this is to keep the area near my kitty box smelling like air, and not horrid ammonia. Cats are so gorgeous, but like newborn babies, they sure can produce some of the foulest smells! So: I am in love with this baby. Thanks Hamilton Beach!

Honeywell 50250 99.97% Pure HEPA Round Air Purifier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In this review, I will first summarize the major points and focus the details afterward. This way you can stop reading when you get the level of details you need. The definitions of "HEPA" and "CADR" are placed at the end of this review. Please vote for this review if you like it:)I appreciate it.

**Kimmer (another reviewer) has kindly uploaded a wonderful youtube video to demonstrate the noise level, title: "Honeywell Enviracare 50250 air purifier".Since your computer speaker will affect the demonstrated noise level, make sure you gauge the noise to Kimmer's voice.**

Pros:Powerful, inexpensive, permanent HEPA filter, easy to maintain, 360 degree air intake and output, portable, accessible replacement parts, good support from Kaz, a 5 year limited warranty.
Cons: Noisy, high power consumption, not stylish.

Previously I owned the Honeywell HFD-130 Germicidal Tower HEPA Air Purifier with Permanent IFD Filter, but due to its ozone emission and my respiratory problem, I returned it back to HomeDepot.I got fully refunded and bought this Honeywell 50250N on the same day and loved it.I have a mild allergy.I sneeze and experience itchy eyes when I am outdoor, but stop when I am at home (where my purifier is).I recommend two important points when shopping for a purifier: (1) always examines the CADR number. It is a decent performance indicator, (2) always buys an air purifier adequate for your need.A 100 sq ft purifier will not work for a 1000 sq ft living space.

Honeywell 50250N is a true HEPA filter purifier with a 250 CADR, which translates into a recommended 375 square feet usage space.Currently, this purifier is being sold at ~$160.It has been quoted as the only purifier <$200 that can clean air effectively by Consumer Reports, Consumer Search, Air-purifier America. For most HEPA purifiers, the filter replacement is the highest up-keeping cost and is ~$100 annually.50250N has a permanent Lifetime HEPA filter which can save a lot of money. The purifier has an activated carbon prefilter which protects the HEPA filter and absorbs traces level of volatile molecules, sources for odors. The prefilter is recommended to be replaced every 3 months for optimal odor removal. If odor removal is not needed, then the prefilter does not need to be replaced regularly. This purifier has a 360 degree air intake and air exhaust, making it effective at circulating air.The unit weighs in 20.1 pounds and all parts are large and sturdy.Replacement parts are relatively easy to find.I have seen them at my local Target, Home Depot, Walmart and Sears from time to time.

The unit vibrates slightly at its lowest fan speed and air "pulses" out of the unit.Kaz consumer service was very helpful in explaining this. The small vibration is due to slow air buildup across HEPA filter. The vibration is considered as a normal feature and does not affect its performance.I did my own test to prove this, and you can too: take your HEPA filter out of the unit and run it, and the purifier should stop wobbling. This proves the vibration is due to air buildup, not an imbalance fan.

The unit has two major shortcomings. It is noisy at the highest fan speed, and noticeable at the lowest fan speed. For those who wonder if you can tolerate the noise, it is not a machine cranking noise. It is a high air flow sound. If you have any doubt, you can always buy this unit from a respected local store, so that you can return it easily. The purifier also has a high power consumption of 170/120/50 watts at the three fan speeds. This purifier is not stylish.

Is Honeywell 50250N the best purifier?Absolutely not!IQ Air purifiers are considered the very best, but their cheapest model is $700 and many are above $1000.Honeywell 50250N is one of the most effective purifiers in its prize range: <$200.In comparison, we will look at Whirlpool AP450 which is rated as number 1 by Consumer Reports, and Ionic Breeze Quadra which has a very large market.Whirlpool AP450 has a ~330 CADR rating and costs $250.This yields a nice ratio of 1.3 CADR/$, which means you get 1.3 CADR capability for every dollar spent.Honeywell 50250N has an even better ratio of 1.6 CADR/$.The two purifiers are also competitive in term of the operation cost.AP450 is energy star certified using only 105 W, whereas 50250N has a permanent HEPA filter. In the case both purifiers run at full speed continuously (24/7) and the electricity cost is $0.1 per kWh (average in USA), the annual electricity costs will be $92 and $150 for AP450 and 50250N, respectively. The AP450 saves an annual $60 in electricity, but costs an annual $90 for HEPA filter replacement.Of course, AP450 is more powerful, so when considering the cleaning power per annual cost, they are almost the same.On the other hand, Ionic Breeze is a disappointment. It has an estimated 10-20 CADR and it costs over $300 -- a ridiculous 0.03-0.07 CADR/$ ratio. It was the worst purifier tested independently by Consumer Reports and Air-Purifier-America.Moreover, ionic breeze produces a high level of ozone, which Consumer Reports has issued health warnings. You can easily find the related news on the web.

(Honeywell 50250N has the Lifetime HEPA filter, but Honeywell 50250 does not.I ordered my second Honeywell from BeachCamera through Amazon, but the one arrived is the 50250 version.I called and BeachCamera admitted it does not have 50250N.I finally got my refund, but it was a hassle.)

A spotlight review here claims Sharp Plasmacluster FP-N60CX is a better purifier. I disagree.FP-N60CX has a 210 CADR and is sold at ~$350 - less powerful and more expansive. The review justifies this expense by stating that the FP-N60CX needs one carbon filter replacement in 5 years and consequently saves $200 in 5 years. This is a math error. The carbon filter replacement for Honeywell 50250N costs $200 in 5 year, but FP-N60CX also needs replacement at the end of 5 years at $80.This is a $120 difference in 5 years. The 5 years replacement is also the best case scenario, as it may need to be replaced as early as in 2 years which results in no cost advantage. According to its operation manual (available online), the FP-N60CX carbon filter needs to be cleaned every 2 months using a 6-steps cleaning process: (1) vacuum clean (2) soak in detergent mixture for 30 minute (3) scrub with a toothbrush (4) rinse with clean water (5) remove excess water with a big towel for 1-2 days (6) hang up and air dry for another 1-2 days. In one year, this may result up to a month-worth downtime.Let's summarize this: $120 saving for cleaning the carbon filter 30 times in 5 years. You save $4 for each cleaning.Since each cleaning can take an hour, this equates $4 per hour of labor. You cannot even pay an illegal immigrant to do this!I also want to reiterate that Honeywell 50250N has a permanent HEPA filter, which can be regenerated by vacuum cleaning. It takes 3 minutes to do and need to be done twice a year.Considering the typical HEPA replacement costs $100 annually, each filter cleaning saves $50.That is $50 for 3 minutes of your time, or $1000 for an hour. This is a real saving. The "plasmacluster" feature is somewhat of a gimmick.Major hospitals, national, pharmaceutical and computer research labs use HEPA for air purification.

One last point about vacuum cleaning the Lifetime HEPA filter: a HEPA grade cleaner is recommended to regenerate the HEPA filter.Otherwise, the particles on the Lifetime HEPA will be dispersed back into the air during vacuuming. If you are suffering from a serious allergy or asthma, then you should consider owning a HEPA vacuum cleaner to begin with.Alternatively, you can vacuum the filter outside of your home so the fine particles are dispersed outside, such as your patio.Yes, and if you are really funny, you can secretly do this at your ex-girlfriend's room.I am kidding!

Definitions:

HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) is a filter grade strictly defined by US Department of Energy, in which the filter can remove >99.97% of airborne particles that is 0.3 micrometer. The removal success rate is usually equal or higher for larger particles and for slightly smaller particles (down to ~0.01 micro), but performance drops drastically for much smaller particles.HEPA can effectively trap pollens, fine dust and smoke particles -- the major causes of allergy. "HEPA-type" and "HEPA-like" purifiers fall short of this requirement, and there is no strict guideline for their exact definitions.Historically, HEPA was a top-secret technology developed to filter radioactive aerosol, part of the Manhattan Project.HEPA is not designed to remove odors and VOC (volatile organic chemicals), since they are much smaller than the effective range of a HEPA filter.

CADR (clean air delivery rate) is certified by the AHAM (Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers).CADR is expressed in units of cubic feet volume per minute. The suggested floor space is usually calculated based on a 8 foot ceiling and a 5 air change setting. For example, Honeywell 50250N produces 250 cubic feet of clean air per minute or 15000 cu ft per hour.Divides 15000 cu ft by a 8 ft ceiling and by a 5 air change equates to a recommended floor space of 375 sq ft.A shortcut is to multiple the CADR number by 1.5: e.g. 250 CADR X 1.5 = 375 sq ft.Although the recommended floor space value is easier to relate to, there is no legal guideline for the calculation.Neoair's most powerful purifier, Neoair Plus, has a suggested 600 sq ft floor space, much larger than that of Honeywell 50250N.In reality, Neoair Plus has a CADR <200, meaning it is a less powerful purifier. It turns out Neoair uses a 2.5 air change per hour for the floor space calculation.Another company, Alen, uses a 2 air change per hour for their calculations.Consequently, it is more reliable to compare air purifiers based on their CADR values.

Honeywell HFD-120-Q Tower HEPAQuiet Air Purifier with Permanent IFD Filter, Black Review

Honeywell HFD-120-Q Tower HEPAQuiet Air Purifier with Permanent IFD Filter, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I decided to get this air cleaner after trying the Sharper Image Ionic Breeze and a larger Honeywell HEPA filter. At the time of purchase, the Sharper Image was the only one with a permanent filter. This was a big plus for me seeing as the older HEPA cleaners have 2 filters to replace, the larger one being nearly the price of the machine. This Honeywell tower has a permanent filter.

There are many claims for and against the Ionic Breeze. I'm still undecided on how effective it is -- but I feel almost the same way about my large HEPA filter. I found myself running both of them to control my allergies. Although I cleaned them regularly and found dust on both, I can't say the air was particularly different. However, shortly after turning this on in the bedroom for the first time, I could smell a difference. I haven't had it long enough to say it's made a real dent in my allergies -- plus the fact that my allergies are intermittant -- but I'm pleased that I even notice it.

One thing to note -- the Amazon description says there is an independently controlled Ionizer. I assumed that meant I could control it independently of the HEPA Unit. If that's the case, I have yet to see how. It's not mentioned anywhere in the tiny booklet and there are no buttons for it. For that reason, I am giving this 4 stars instead of 5. I did want to control the ionizer separately because I wanted to be able shut that off entirely. There are camps on both sides arguing for an against ionizers, and some claim they make breathing worse -- so being able to compare with and without it was something I wanted to try. If anyone else knows how to do it, then post it here. :)

Compared to the larger Honeywell that I own, this one is much more quiet on each of its three settings. When I first read the description I didn't pay attention to the oscillating function. Now, it's my favorite part of this cleaner. The oscillator is the thing that is independent of the cleaner -- and when its on, the machine rotates in place, back and forth, blowing the air in an arc. I like this feature a lot and I think helps with cleaning a larger area. Maybe the ionizer is attached to this feature?

This unit is significantly heavier than the similar looking Ionic Breeze. Also, the manual states it should be placed 3 feet from any wall or furniture. The cord is not that long, and placing the cord behind some furniture to get to an outlet has made it nearly impossible for me to reach a spot a full 3 feet away.

Anyway, so far I am pleased and would recommend this unit to some one who is looking for a compromise between those two types of cleaners.

Honeywell 18155 SilentComfort Permanent, True HEPA Air Purifier Review

Honeywell 18155 SilentComfort Permanent, True HEPA Air Purifier

"HONEYWELL: 18155 SilentComfort Air Purifier"

First off, I'd like to say that this is the only air purifier I've ever owned so I cannot compare it fairly to others so I won't even try. But I've read dozens of reviews about the Honeywell QuietCare 17000 and noticed the main complaint is that it's not really queit at all. Well...I hope this helps.

As far as the noise level goes this SilentComfort 18155 is very quiet on MED and LOW. On HIGH, right next to it, it's about as loud as our dishwasher about 30 feet away. So it's not bad at all. I can still hear the television and have normal conversations with the family without yelling.

I've done some of my own studies to see how well the dust is being pulled into the machine and can see there is dust building up in the pre-filter over time. It seems to work very well. I've also noticed a difference on how fresh the air smells. My sneezing is almost down to zero, when it's running, and that tells me it's really working.

It does NOT have an IONIZER which IS A GOOD THING in my opinion. I've learned that these ionizers omit ozone. Which inside the home this ozone builds up and can be very harmful to the lungs. I did NOT like the sound of that so I turned away from the "ionizer" models.

It is very sturdy, a little bulky, but not too heavy to put in other rooms from time to time when I feel the need to relocate it. It blows cold air, not like a fan and not too direct, at a 360 degree radius(it also pulls from every direction). The cold air will be nice in the summer but it's not so nice right now in the winter. I like to put it next to the bed and it can get a little chilly when my covers come off. It has a very comforting and relaxing white noise hum to it. The motor runs very soft and consistant. No rattling or buzzing of any kind. It seems very well built.

MY ONLY CONCERN is that the return/exhaust does NOT blow straight up. It blows outword on the top/sides and it pulls from the bottom. This may be a brilliant design or a serious flaw? I question...is it just filtering the same air over and over again or is it like a vortex that pulls the dust into it with the pushing air(kind of like a tornado)? In my studies I found that was a tough call for me to make. But it really does help with my allergies so I must conclude that it's working properly.

I ordered it directly from Amazon and it arrived in 4 days(that includes the weekend) and that was with the FREE SUPERSAVER SHIPPING. Amazon is always fantastic about that, so no complaints there.

OVERALL... I am very pleased, though it may be a little early to give a longevity review right now, the HoneyWell SilentComfort 18155 really seems to work great and I have no complaints. If anything faulty or negative develops I will amend it into this review accordingly.

2 THUMBS UP...and I breathe much easier now.

It is not the biggest unit, and it does not have a lot of features for various control (just two speeds). On high speed, it took in a lot of air. Works well for hallways, bathrooms, and for kitchens, especially if you have pets or cooking smells that linger throughout the house. I also like the idea of it having a permanent filter.

I recommend this product. But if you want more options for speeds, you might want a bigger unit.

Honeywell HHT-011 Compact Air Purifier with Permanent HEPA Filter Review

Honeywell HHT-011 Compact Air Purifier with Permanent HEPA Filter

I have other ionic air cleaners, as well as one that requires a filter. This air purifier is quiet and due to its compact size, can be placed off the floor on a bookcase, dresser top or top shelf which makes it optimal for space-saving and placement. I don't particularly like the noise from air filters and they have a tendency to keep me up.

After spending many dollars on replacement filters and new air cleaners when the filter is no longer made or easily available, this is a welcome addition with a permanent cleanable filter. I bought two of these, one for my bedroom and one for the living room. Set on low all of the time, it is great as it just sounds like a little white noise and is not noticable most of the time. The optional ionic on and off switch, night light, as well as the automated light indicating that the filter should be cleaned is a BONUS besides the low price. So far, I am enjoying cleaner air in an old dusty house with 3 cats and 2 dogs...

I have bought the Sharper Image ionic breeze for the bathroom and find it hard to clean and hope that when I have to clean this filter. Good value for the money.

Product Description:
A great choice for smaller rooms up to 85 square feet in size, the compact Honeywell HEPAClean air purifier (model HHT-011) features a permanent HEPA-Type filter that captures up to 99 percent of microscopic particles such as mold spores, pollen, pet dander, smoke and dust. The filtered air then enters a built-in, separately controlled ionizer for added cleaning and freshening. The independently controlled ionizer releases negative ions into the air that passes through the HEPA-Type filter, and these negative ions attach themselves to very small airborne particles to form larger particles that are then more readily captured by the filter system. The 3-stage cleaning system is rounded out by a washable pre-filter.
The HHT-011 HEPAClean air purifier also offers a nightlight feature that provides soft illumination, an illuminated control panel, and an electronic reminder to clean the filter.

DeLonghi DDH30 30-Pint Capacity Dehumidifier Review

DeLonghi DDH30 30-Pint Capacity Dehumidifier
Average Reviews:

The first DeLonghi 30-pint unit I received from Amazon looked great but did not function properly; the cooling unit that removes water from the air didn't work.I returned the unit for an exchange.(Amazon gets five stars for their excellent return process). The second unit arrived in good condition and worked for about 2 minutes before the compressor in the cooling unit stopped, never to start again.I tested the unit in an 80 degree bathroom at 100 percent humidity and it did not remove a drop of water from the air.The literature with the unit does not provide any help on this type of malfunction, but does give a Web site address (www.delonghi.com).The Web site had great graphics but no useful information.A note to the company asking if there was any way to solve the problem elicited a recommendation to return the unit.
The DDH30 dehumidifier appears well-made in other respects, but clearly there is a quality control problem with the refrigeration unit, or it is easily damaged during shipment. It appears impossible for a homeowner to open the unit to do any minor repairs, so the only alternative is to return units that don't work.An electrical schematic is located behind the removable water bucket, but isn't very helpful because there isn't any easy way to access the unit's innards.I notice that the controls for the DDH30 are more primitive than the larger models.Perhaps those more sophisticated units are more reliable, but I'm not taking the chance...
In my experience, the DDH30 dehumidifier -- like the DeLonghi web site -- looks great but isn't very useful.
